Protecting your computer from online threats has become all the more necessary as of late. More and more websites are becoming infested with viruses that will latch on to your computer and cause several internal damages.

Some websites are built for the sole purpose of giving someone else a virus, and some of those viruses can take personal information from your computer. Stopping these viruses from entering your system is important and that’s where antivirus programs like Avast are useful.

Avast, like many antivirus programs, enables a firewall to form that will prevent anything seen as dangerous from entering your computer. The way it works is Avast firewall is constantly active, scanning for unpredictable downloads or preventing virus-infected popups.

An unsafe website will be blocked, or an alert will be sent to your computer before anything can download. It’s almost inevitable that you will be at threat for downloading a virus. Having a firewall is a necessity in the modern age of the internet.

Sometimes, however, Avast – as with most antivirus software – can detect something called a “false positive.” This is when a website triggers your firewall causing something to be blocked, even if no real threat has been detected.

This can cause a trustworthy website to be blocked and have access denied. This is where disabling Avast firewall comes in handy. Nothing is perfect, and sometimes websites will get incorrectly blocked.

Disable Avast Core Shields:

First, we will instruct you on how to disable Avast Active Protection, as well as how to grant special permission to certain websites:

Step #1 – The first step in disabling Avast’s firewall is to open Avast, click on “Menu” at the top right corner and choose “Settings”.

Step #2 – Now, in the opened menu, at the left, choose “Protection”. Then, click on “Core Shields” and push the “ON/Off” slider.

Step #3 – A drop-down menu will appear where you can then select the length of time in which your Avast firewall will be disabled. Your options for this are as follows:

  • Stop for 10 minutes
  • Stop for 1 hour
  • Stop until the reset of the computer
  • Stop permanently

Each option can be reversed if needed which means by clicking the permanent option, you aren’t left unprotected from viruses forever. It just means your protection will be disabled until you decide otherwise. The timed options will stay active until their specified duration is complete, or until you change the security options again.

By disabling Avast, you are leaving your computer open to virus attacks and accidental downloads. These viruses can be anything from a pesky notification virus, to something that will access your credit card information.

Exploring the internet without the firewall can be dangerous, but some websites still remain blocked even though they’re safe. How does one get around this issue? Adding exceptions to your firewall that allow certain websites access even if a threat has been detected will be useful.

Step #3 – The dropdown menu will appear, where you can choose one of the desired options:

  • Stop for 10 minutes
  • Stop for 1 hour
  • Stop until the reset of the computer
  • Stop permanently

Keep in mind, that you can always get back to these setting and enable avast firewall at any time. Usually, it is better to keep it active, this will help to keep your PC secure and prevent ransomware.

Add firewall exceptions:

The process of adding exceptions to your firewall has a few more steps than simply disabling it altogether. It’s still rather easy and can be done by anyone, regardless of computer experience.

By following these steps, Avast will be able to allow programs and websites through the firewall. This is an easy way around having to completely disable the Avast firewall, so you can remain protected and still surf all of your favorite websites:

Step #1 – Start off by opening the Avast Internet Security program on your computer. Go to “Protection” at the left side and choose “Firewall”.

Here you can find “Application Rules” at the bottom, which is where you can configure the application’s preferences and settings.

Step #2 – Click “New Group” and enter a name for the group. In order to avoid confusion, you may wish to name the group after the program you’re allowing firewall exception to. Once you’ve done this, press “Enter”.

Step #3 – After this, click “New Application Rule” and select the group that you’ve just created. Here, you will need the file location of a program. Search for the main executable file of the program you wish to access, be that a game or an application.

Find its main file and click “Open”. This will grant the file access to be opened, without being blocked by the firewall. Make sure you’ve changed the orange bars to say “All Connections” and hit “Close”.

This will finalize all changes made and secure access to the program you have selected.

Granting access to a program is much preferable to completely disable your Avast firewall. Exceptions allow you to continue using your firewall and protect your computer while granting access to previously denied files. Avast is important and having a firewall will keep your information safe.
