Enterprise Architecture is a relatively new and challenging discipline in the modern IT environment. This novel profession is growing to gain more importance than ever with increased integration of business to IT.

The current IT environment is a complex and dynamic one; companies that do not adopt innovative means to manage their IT environment will be left behind. So, there is good potential for these professionals in the current business scenario. Those who have an innate skill in architecture can explore how to become an enterprise architect through this article.

Who is an Enterprise Architect (EA)?

Before we proceed to answer this question, it is essential to understand what enterprise architecture is? Enterprise Architecture is the process by which companies or establishments organize and maintain the IT infrastructure in such a way to align it to the organizational goals.

Prerequisites to becoming an EA

The answer to the question of how to be an architect in this discipline is not an easy one. It is a comprehensive field of study that requires a lot of experience and a natural flair for the job. Apart from the enterprise architect certifications, let us look at some of the other considerations an aspiring EA has to look out for before he/she chooses this enterprise career.

  • Natural Liking towards architecture – the degree and certification will teach you the process, but if you have to excel in it, you should be driven by the passion you have for this type of job.
  • Select a component discipline – Most IT architects have this question as to what degree do you need to be an architect. The simple answer is to pick one of the architecture components as your mainstream. You can take up data architecture, security architecture application, or network architecture as your primary areas of learning for your graduation.
  • Start your work experience in the IT field initially – You cannot be an enterprise architect right after your graduation. This job needs quite a bit of experience of working within an IT environment while closely following the processes it supports. An EA should have a fair idea of the business and in-depth knowledge of how IT helps the business to be able to design and formulate the architecture. This comes only through experience.
  • Incorporate other disciplines of architecture into your learning – You should expand your knowledge and expertise in other areas of architecture as well. When you work with all the component disciplines is when you understand the EA framework.
  • Internship – Work as a trainee or apprentice under a successful architect for a few years. Once you hit a decent number of hours of training under the EA, people will recognize you for your prowess.
  • Apply For your masters – While you can get your graduation done in one of the component disciplines, always go for the masters in EA as it will give your EA career a boost.

Certifications

The enterprise architect certification can be obtained from any recognized institutes in the US, UK, and Germany. There are short duration courses that last for a week or a month. It is highly recommended to go through the FEAC black belt certification course. This course comes with a lot of workshops and seminars.

The FEAC provides certifications in FEAF, TOGAF, and DODAF, which covers all the frameworks of EA. The instructors are famous EA’s themselves.

Career Path

It is becoming one of the most lucrative careers for those who have a natural flair for designing and architecture. The growth potential in this enterprise career is immense and to a great extent, untapped.

Once you are a successful EA, you can also move ahead to do your thesis in this field to gain more acceptance and also move towards the teaching profession.
